More job losses possible at Musashi

Officials confirmed Wednesday more possible job losses at the Musashi Inc. plant in Bennettsville.

Ravonda John, human resources manager for the company, said the company is considering the cost benefits of moving the lines to Japan.

“We are investigating closing the facility here in Bennettsville,” she said. “The final decision has not been made.”

The ATV line, which was already in the process of being moved, accounts for 60 jobs in the Pee Dee.

“The ATV business is moving at the end of April,” John said. “That includes the support groups and other areas of the facility that support that operation.

“Taking that into consideration, that will be about 60 people. But the assembly will still be here. That’s not moving until August or September.“

John said associates of the company have been warned of the possible closure. As of now, the only confirmed job losses will occur when the ATV assembly line heads to Japan in the fall, sending eight more jobs overseas.

There are 220 employees at the company.

Musashi South Carolina Inc. was established in 1999. The company produces ATV gears and assemblies and automotive differential gears. It is one of only two Musashi facilities in the United States.
