Myrtle Beach police are investigating a severe crash that killed a 43-year-old man.

Horry County deputy coroner Tamara Willard identifies the victim as John Lafluer, or Myrtle Beach.

Willard says Lafluer was pronounced dead at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center at 3:15 p.m. Willard says Lafluer died from multiple trauma due to a motor vehicle accident.

Police and rescue crews were called to the scene on Highway 17, near Ocean Blvd., at the back gate of the old Air Force base, just after 2:00 p.m.

Capt. David Knipes says Lafluer was traveling North on Highway 17 when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed, head-on, into a tree.

Knipes says Lafluer also hit a transformer and some traffic lights in that area were out for a couple of hours.

The crash is under investigation and police are looking into whether speed was a factor.
