Moses earns her degree
Quanketa Moses of Marion graduated from Limestone College in May, earning her Bachelor’s of Science degree in social work.
Gerald is conference queen
Pastor Marvin Hemingway and officers and members of the S.C. Woman to Woman Conference have chosen the First Lady of Piney Grove Baptist Church, Ellen W. Gerald, wife of Pastor Thurman Gerald, the 2009 Conference Queen.
Hemingway said Gerald was chosen as queen because she is a role model to all. He went on to say that "As noticing and admiring the works of Sister Gerald, we have noticed that she strives on doing the will of the Lord as well as being a humble vessel for the Lord. She is without a doubt a hard working, dedicated and devoted follower of Christ. She allows her work to speak for her, in which she does an outstanding job."
Gerald takes the crown from the 2008 Queen, Deacon Debra D. Fling, a member of Greater Christ Temple, Bennie Davis, pastor. This was the 10th annual S.C. Woman to Woman Conference For information call (843) 423-7117.
Washington, others get scholarships
The 2009 Georgia Thomas Memorial Scholarship award will be given to James Quintin Washington, son of James Washington III and Joycelyn Washington and the grandson of Christine B. Washington and the late Rev. James Washington Jr.
Washington is a 2009 graduate of Marion High School and will be attending South Carolina State University, Orangeburg. He plans to major in history and attends St. John AME Church in Marion, South Carolina.
Previous Georgia Thomas Memorial Scholarship recipients were Thomas Ocean, 2008, son of Thomas and Abigail Ocean, a 2008 graduate of Marion High School. He is attending the University of South Carolina and majoring in business management; Patsy Finklea, 2007, daughter of Andre Finklea and the late Nora Finklea and the granddaughter of Alma Finklea. A 2007 graduate of Marion High School, she is attending Columbia College, majoring in psychology; Melinda Powell, 2006, daughter of Linda Powell and granddaughter of Florence Hudley Powell, is a graduate of Marion High School and is attending Morris College, majoring in biology.
The 2005 recipient of the Georgia Thomas Memorial Scholarship is Robert Donte’ Lester, son of Robert Lester and Mary Lester; grandson of Weston Legette and the late Bessie Avant Legette; Alene Lester and the late Mr. William P. Lester. Lester is a Marion High School graduate and is a third year honor student at Clemson University majoring in mechanical engineering.
The Georgia Thomas Scholarship is funded annually by Ron Thomas, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Thomas. Thomas is a vice president with Martha Steward Living. The funds are channeled through The Mt. Moriah Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter #11, Marion, where Sister Eunice Gerald serves as Worthy Matron and Brother Elmore Davis serves as Worthy Patron.
