Passenger dies in Georgetown County crash

A 16-year-old person is dead after an early Saturday morning fatal vehicle accident off Brick Chimney Road in Georgetown County.

South Carolina Highway Patrol officials said the accident happened shortly before 5:50 a.m. on Saturday.

According to officials, 17-year-old Jeremy Howdyshell fell asleep at the wheel of his 1999 Honda SUV. Howdyshell drove the vehicle off the left side of the road where it crashed.

The 16-year-old passenger, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Highway Patrol.

The driver, Howdyshell, was transported to Georgetown County Hospital. His condition is unknown at this time. Highway Patrol said Howdyshell was wearing a seatbelt.
