Myron Wheeler has been a member of the Voter Registration and Election Commission for the past 23 years.
“You’re the remaining member after all of the years,” Chairman Robert Harrelson said, presenting Wheeler with a Resolution of Appreciation from the S.C. House of Representatives. Commission members thanked Wheeler for his service during their monthly meeting this past week, presenting him with the gift of a watch for his retirement celebration.
Wheeler was appointed to the Commission when it was reorganized in 1986.
He is a member of the Mullins Rotary Club, Mullins Chamber of Commerce and Mullins Presbyterian Church. Wheeler is also the 40-year owner and operator of Wheeler Electrical Service Inc.
“I can’t say I didn’t enjoy my little retirement,” Wheeler joked before sharing his thoughts on the gesture. “One of the reasons why I got out at this time, is because I think Marion County, as of right now, has the best board I’ve ever served in,” he said, calling the group honest and one that does a good job making the right decisions.
In return, Commission members all had good things to say about Wheeler.
Jacqueline McGill said Wheeler was a joy to work with and an honest and fair person.
“As a relatively new member to the Commission, I was pleased to able to work with him,” Anne Cox said.
Harrelson called Wheeler a friend and a great citizen of Marion County South Carolina.
“He was also a very good Commission member, he knew the election laws,” Brenda Hatfield said.
“I’ve known Myron since high school days, it’s been and an honor and a pleasure working with him,” the Rev. Curtis Campbell said.
Lewis Evans called Wheeler fair and honest and Linda Godfrey said he has been very helpful.
Director of the Commission, Teresa Moody said since she joined the team in 2006 it’s been a comfort to have Wheeler’s advice and experience.
Wheeler was joined by his wife Denise and said he’s learned a lot through the years, as the election process started with paper ballots, progressed through electronic voting machines and now has touch screens. “There has been a lot of progress, but there still are a lot of changes happening regarding election laws … a lot people just don’t know what’s involved.
Wheeler said he’s more than his fair share of controversies, but that the election process in the County gets his vote of confidence.
“I wanted to see that elections in Marion were run fair and properly,” he said about his reasoning for serving on the commission.
Harrelson, the chairman of the Commission said there would not be a replacement to the vacant position.
