It was a difficult task for Mark Sanford to admit that he cheated on his wife with a woman in Argentina. Explaining the affair directly to his children may be equally challenging for Sanford.
Dr. Jim Remington, a Pastoral Counselor at Coastal Samaritan Counseling Center, says he thinks Sanford’s four sons will be traumatized by the news.
Explaining the news of the governor's affair has been challenging for families.
Ronnie and Leslie Bussey said they had not talked to their two young daughters about the affair.
Dr. Remington says the Busseys, and other families, should discuss infidelity and Governor Sanford’s affair.
“Kids nowadays are hearing everything. There's no way of preventing our children from being in touch with communication from the media. You can send them to their room, and whatever, and they're going to hang out with somebody and they're going to get all this communication, so I think parents need to understand you can't stop your kids from being exposed to communication,” Dr. Remington said.
Remington says families should focus on discussing morals and using the governor's mistakes as a life lesson.
“When parents are talking to the kids about this, don't get into the political stuff…what we need now is compassion for the governor, compassion for the governor's wife, the governor's children, the lady in Argentina, this a time for an outpouring of compassion and not criticism and judgmentalism,” Dr. Remington said.
Bussey says he will tell his daughters about the importance of committing to a married partner, which Dr. Remington says is valuable advice to share when discussing the governor's affair with children.
