More than 200 family members, friends and fellow law enforcement officers gathered for a candlelight vigil and remembrance ceremony in the Marion Opera House earlier this month. Retired Marion County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Willie B. Ellison has been spearheading the vigil. This past week, 28 individuals were honored, including a group of brothers, a former sheriff and a pioneer radio announcer. Their pictures will join others on display in the Marion County Museum on Willcox Avenue.
Showing appreciation for what law officers and their families sacrificed to protect, serve and assist the families in the county is what the evening is about, Gloria Evans said. Ann Buroughs, whose father was among those honored, read the history of each deceased officer honored. She also read a poem written by Ellison.
Family members came forward one by one to light a candle to burn in memory of their loved one. The somber event is also a celebration, Marion Chief of Police Willie Smith said, a celebration of their lives.
"Oftentimes we forget about those who blaze the trail before us," Sen. Kent Williams began in his keynote address. It takes courageous and brave people to put their lives on the line for others, he said, adding "We appreciate these and the ones serving now as law officers."
Even when they stop us for speeding, they just want us to be safe, he said.
