Chesterfield County School District’s $50 million general fund budget for the 2009-10 school year has been approved by members of the board of education.
The board approved the budget totaling $50,115,377, which was a decrease of $2,251,797 from the 2008-09 general fund budget, according to a press release issued by the school district.
The budget doesn’t include a millage increase.
When developing the coming fiscal year’s budget, the district moved the expenses of some personnel from the general funds to federal funds; reduced compensation for working retirees by 15 percent; and called for one furlough day for all employees and two furlough days for selected administrators.
The budget doesn’t include any significant plan for mid-year budget cuts if recommended by the (state) Board of Economic Advisors; however, “in expectation of those cuts and the eventual loss of stimulus funds, vacant positions will not be filled unless they are critical to the organization, ” superintendent Dr. John E. Williams said in the press release.
The district will immediately sequester 20 percent of supply and travel money until the district has a feel for the direction of the economy, Williams said
“If there are no further recommended cuts by the Board of Economic Advisors, we will release the sequestered funds,” he said. “I also hope it will not be necessary to increase the number of furlough days.”
