Darlington County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit deputies have arrested the operator of Stevenson’s Lawn Service in Hartsville in connection with the seizure of about $5,000 in marijuana.
Nazareth Montrell Stevenson, 34, of 1714 Blanding Drive is charged with distribution of marijuana, distribution of more than 28 grams of marijuana within proximity of a school and possession of more than 28 grams marijuana with intent to distribute, Capt. Andy Locklair said.
A little more than 7 pounds of marijuana was seized as evidence during the bust, which happened about 11 a.m. Thursday at the suspect’s residence and was prompted by an extensive investigation, Sheriff Wayne Byrd said.
Also confiscated were two cars, lawn care equipment, three guns and about $2,000 in cash. Investigators said they believe the lawn care equipment was either purchased with drug money or exchanged for marijuana.
Investigators are trying to determine if the drugs were grown locally or smuggled into the country, Byrd said. The investigation continues.
The suspect also could face federal charges pending the outcome of the continuing investigation, Locklair said.
“Not only was he cutting weeds, but he was selling it as well,” the captain said. “We’re definitely dealing with dealer and not a user.”
The arrest “puts a big dent in the drug dealing activity in the area,” Byrd said.
Stevenson remains in custody at the Darlington County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
