Hartsville man faces child abuse charge

A Hartsville man was arrested Monday after police said he abused a 2-year-old child, Darlington County Sheriff’s Capt. Andy Locklair said.

Dusty James Helmes, 23, of 902 Gilbert St. is charged with child abuse, Darlington County Detention Center bookings reports show.

Investigators said the incident took place at the suspect’s home the day he was arrested. Officers were called to a local doctor’s office about the case, Locklair said.

Two children, including the young victim, were taken into emergency protective custody by deputies, Locklair said.

Sheriff’s deputies and state Department of Social Services agents continue to investigate the the case.

Helmes was released from the jail in Darlington after posting a $10,000 cash or surety bond.
