The victim of a fatal motorcycle crash Saturday has been identified as an off-duty Chesterfield County sheriff’s deputy.

Chesterfield County Sheriff Sam Parker said 37-year-old Bernard Smith was killed in the accident, which happened at 9:10 p.m. Saturday, about two miles outside of Cheraw.

Smith was traveling north on Midway Road on a 2005 Suzuki when he ran off the right side of the road, struck a driveway and then a ditch, S.C. Highway Patrol reports show. Smith wasn’t wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Parker said Smith had been with the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office since 2005 and was named deputy of the year in 2008. He is survived by his wife and two children.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the highway patrol.
