Marion County Animal Shelter has fundraisers

It's all about the puppies! And the kittens, and the dogs and the cats ...many animals are looking for new homes while being cared for at the Marion County Animal Shelter, managed by the nonprofit group Paws to the Rescue. To donate you time, Pedigree Puppy Chow, dog food, toys, paper towels, cleaning supplies, treats, or shovels to fill in the holes the dogs dig, drop by the shelter at 123 Dog and Cat Court off U.S. Highway 76.

Working together to save the animals: Several volunteers have sponsored fundraisers and helped out at the Marion County Animal Shelter recently. The shelter is managed by the nonprofit group Paws to the Rescue, which had an open house and grand opening on June 6.

Cara with Pawprints in the Sand took care of grooming dogs during the day's events (below) and Dennis Brown, animal control and code enforcement officer with the City of Marion, was on hand for the day's event, ready to be dunked for the good cause (below).

Jennifer Nall, shelter director, said all the volunteers were a huge help with setting up tents, tables, yard sale stuff, etc. and then, helping to tear it all back down. "We wouldn't have been able to do it without them."

This past weekend, Animal Shelter Volunteer Irene miller and her granddaughter, who came all the way from Richmond, Va., helped raise money during the Mud Boggin' events at the Carolina Entertainment Center in Marion County on U.S. Highway 501.

"We still need donations and we really need a new facility," Miller said. The crowd was great, Miller said, and her granddaughter collected more than $200.
"We would like to thank everyone that made that possible ... a special thank you to John Gallo for allowing us to have a stand out there. Anyone wishing to donate can send or drop gifts by the shelter at Paws to the Rrescue, 123 Dog and Cat Court, Marion."

"Jen has worked very hard on getting those animals treated, spayed, neutered and transported to happy homes," Miller said. "Now, if we can get people to help with making a new facility come true, that would be a blessing again!"

Miller's granddaughter collects donations for Marion County's animal shelter on a hot Saturday.
