Board receives good report on audits

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Charles Jones with Kenneth Cobb and Company presented audit reports for the Marion County Board of Education and Marion County Technical Education Center at this month’s County Board meeting.
Jones said he thought the County Board’s fund balance was strong. Board chairman Donnie Hill said a plan was in place to take care of purchasing procedures.

The board holds about 1.3 million dollars in their capital projects fund, he said, adding that it was an excellent balance.
Jones reported MCTEC has a strong $756,000 unreserved fund balance.

Marion County Adult Education School coordinator Candyce Brooks presented bid proposals and recommendations to the Board.

Board members approved a bid for Student Employee Badge System for student ID’s. Board member Cynthia Leggette voted against the recommendation after suggesting the request be tabled, but Hill responded that the funding source required that the money be spent before June 30.

Consultant Steve Quick reminded board members that they didn’t have a procurement code.

Board members approved Brooks request to award a bid to purchase a LED sign at the school and the upgrade of the alarm and security system at the school.
Brooks finally requested approval to begin a resurfacing and drainage project on the school’s parking lot.

Quick said he was not privy to the executive session meeting between Brooks and the Board to discuss the projects but said it was his guess that the state funding should have spent during the 2007-08 year but for some reason it was not done so.

Brooks requested the authority to pursue an engineer for the project and to carry over funds from the school’s fund balance into the next fiscal year as a line item for capital outlays used for the project.
The request was later withdrawn by Brooks and will be discuss during the June 16 meetings.
