COLUMBIA (AP) — Legislators will decide whether vetoes stand or fail on tougher payday lending regulations and a measure that limits the governor's influence on the State Ports Authority.
Legislators return Tuesday to take up 10 vetoes from the stack of bills they left Gov. Mark Sanford before going home early in May.
Sanford vetoed a payday lending bill that limits people to a single $550 loan at any time by creating a database lenders would have to check. Consumers would have to wait a day between loans for the first seven and then two days for additional loans.
Sanford said consumers need access to the loans.
He also vetoed a bill that limits his authority to remove Ports Authority board members. Sanford said that makes the agency less accountable.
