FRANK HOLLOWAY
A celebration of the life of Frank Arlington Holloway will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 15, 2009, at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Hartsville. The Rev. Phil Thrailkill of St. Luke United Methodist Church, Hartsville, will officiate. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Holloway completed his earthly journey on Monday, June 8. He was born on June 12, 1925, in Norfolk, Va., the eldest child of the late Frank Arlington Holloway and the late Virginia Lesner Holloway.
A proud member of the Greatest Generation, Mr. Holloway, served his country during World War II as a member of the United States Army,
rising to the rank of
staff sergeant. He was a member of the 42nd Infantry Division and served with his unit in France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Italy and Germany.
Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Mr. Holloway returned home to Philadelphia, Pa., and continued to work in the construction industry. He had already begun his career prior to his military service when, at the age of 14, he began working as a carpenter's apprentice to his father. Mr. Holloway returned to school and then entered The Evening School of The Drexel Institute of Technology (now Drexel University) from which he graduated with a BS in civil engineering with a structural major. Mr. Holloway worked full-time, frequently outdoors, while attending college and often expressed his gratitude to those professors who allowed him to take his exams on Saturday, rather than after a day of tiring, physical labor.
Following graduation from Drexel, Mr. Holloway began a long and very successful career in construction management. Among other companies, he worked for Catalytic Construction, General Electric, United Technologies, The Korman Corporation, The Oxford Group, and Bozzuto and Associates. While with GE, Mr. Holloway was responsible for the construction of one of the company's first computer "clean" rooms. He oversaw construction of countless shopping centers and malls, single family homes, nursing homes, condominiums and apartments, as well
as missile and other strategic sites. Mr. Holloway retired at age 72, returning home to South Carolina to his three "babies."
Mr. Holloway is survived by the love of his life, his wife, June, (Big Baby) with whom he celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Feb. 12, 2009. He is also survived by his daughter, W. Carole Holloway (Medium-size Baby) and her husband, Mal J. Hyman, of Hartsville, and their daughter, Nicole Holloway Hyman, Pop-Pop's beloved Coley (Tiny Baby).
Mr. Holloway's sister, Virginia C. Holloway, of Pennsauken, N.J.; and his brother, Joseph H. Holloway, of Upper Darby, Pa., remain to cherish his memory. Also surviving are his dear brothers- and sisters-in law, David and Hester Bottonfield of Hartsville and Bobby and Lillian Rogers of Bishopville.
Mr. Holloway was preceded in death by his sister, Emma R. Holloway.
In lieu of flowers, it was Mr. Holloway's desire that contributions be made to either Harvest Hope Food Bank or The Billy Hardee Home for Boys, Darlington, SC.
