A Bennettsville man has been sentenced to more than nine years in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm in connection with a gang-related shooting, according to a press release from U.S. Attorney W. Walter Wilkins.
U.S. District Court Judge Terry L. Wooten sentenced 23-year-old Laqurone Trankil Kinney to 112 months in prison.
On March 30, 2007, Kinney was identified as the driver of a vehicle involved in a drive-by shooting in Bennettsville. The victim, a known member of a gang, was shot in the hip when the vehicle in which he was sitting was fired upon at least seven times by several men of a rival gang.
On Dec. 20, 2007, Kinney was a passenger in a car stopped for driving without headlights and was found to have a gun tucked in his waistband. When tested, the shell casings from the March 30 shooting matched the gun found in Kinney’s waistband.
Kinney has a previous robbery conviction and cannot lawfully possess a firearm.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Rose Mary Parham of the Florence office prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Bennettsville Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as part of Project CeaseFire, an initiative of the United States Attorneys Office that seeks to aggressively prosecute gun-related crimes.
