Providing a safe and fun atmosphere for children is the most important part of a babysitter’s job. Marion Regional Healthcare System is offering a free, interactive babysitting class from 9 a.m. to noon on June 12 in Classroom A of the Marion Regional Medical Center that will cover the basics of babysitting including: Safety, First Aid, Shaken Baby Syndrome, SIDS, Feeding, Diapering and Toileting, Hand Hygiene, Easy Fix Snacks and Fun Activities for Children.
During the upcoming summer months, many teenagers will earn some extra cash by providing babysitting services. This is a great opportunity to learn responsibility and assist working parents with summer child care while school is out of session. More than just a part-time job, babysitters are joining the parents and working as part of a team to provide care for their children, a job that should not be handled lightly.
There are some key areas of responsibility to address when considering a summer job as a babysitter.
First, take time to learn the rules parents have established for their children so that you can continue to reinforce what they are teaching and make your job easier by not changing the system. It is also important to understand the culture of the family you are working for if it is different from yours.
A little research can help you to be prepared and provide some educational information to the children throughout the day. Above all, current and future babysitters, as well as children who stay home alone or with younger siblings, will learn how to handle the challenges of babysitting and the best ways to keep themselves and children in their care safe.
