Adam Vereen
Galivant’s Ferry — Adam M. Vereen was born April 29, 1924, in Horry County to the late Sam and Hannah Elliott Vereen. He was the widower of Dorothy Davis Vereen. He was a member of St. John Freewill Baptist Church, where he served on the Trustee Board for over 50 years. A funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Sunday, May 24, 2009, at St. John, with Elder Edward Gore presiding, and Bishop Bobby Vereen, eulogist. Interment was at the church cemetery. He is survived by his sons: Richard; Charles; Albert; and grandson Wayne; his daughters: Patricia; Sharon; Lisa; and Chaliese; his brothers: Marion; George; Willie; and Bishop Bobby; and his sisters: Naomi; Laura; and Neathra.
Helen Dawson
Marion — Helen Marjorie White Dawson was born May 18, 1928, in Gresham to the late Napolean and Maggie Richardson White.
She was the sister of Margaret Johnson. She was educated in Marion County Public Schools, and continued her education at Allen University at Columbia, and at Hampton Institute at Hampton, Va. She taught school in Marion County for 36 years. On Dec. 7, 1957, she married the late David Dawson, and they were the parents of Davette Sherryl, and Sonyja Erna. For over fifty years, she was a member of Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, where a funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Memorial Day 2009, with Pastor Henry McGill, Jr. officiating.
Interment was at Devotion Gardens. She served as a deaconess for many decasdes, and she was a member of the Lily of the Valley Chapter No. 264 of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Mount Zion Tent No. 1.
Janie Cooley
Marion — Janie McCray Cooley was born Jan. 16, 1904, in Marion. She was a life long member of Mt.Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, where a funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Saturday, 30 May 2009, with Pastor Henry McGill, Jr. officiating. Interment was at Jackson & Daughters Cemetery. She is survived by her grandchildren: Johnny McCray, Robert McCray, Willie McCray, and Ethel Shackelford, all of Wilmington.
Faye McAlister Shelley
Marion — Faye McAlister Shelley, 58, died Thursday, June 4, 2009, in her home after an extended illness. Services were at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, at Reedy Creek Baptist Church, entombment followed at Palmetto Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Shelley was born in Hannah, a daughter of Elma Barrow Gray (Jack) and the late Hoyt McAlister. She was also predeceased by her brother, William Donald “Don” McAlister. Mrs. Shelley was the Purchasing Clerk for Marion County for 26 years, and a member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Harry L. Shelley; son, Ronny B. Shelley and his wife Melissa, of Marion; stepfather, Bill Gray of Marion; sister, Gayle Reynolds and her husband Jack, of Maryland; and two grandsons, Brandon and Joshua Shelley, both of Marion.

Sherry Ann Goforth Johnson
Nichols — Sherry Ann Goforth Johnson, 40, wife of James F. Johnson, Jr., died Thursday, May 28, 2009 in her home after an extend illness.
She was born April 8, 1969, in Kings Mountain, N.C., a daughter of Pauline Allen Goforth and the late William Vernon Goforth. Sherry was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. She loves all kinds of animals, but her most favorite were horses.
Surviving Sherry in addition to her husband of the home are her mother, Pauline Allen Goforth of Loris, 2 children, James Franklin Johnson, III and Morgan Elizabeth Johnson, both of the home, 2 sisters, Angel (Gary) Epperley and their daughter Courtney of Ridgeland and Lori (Gary) Quellette and their daughter Kandice and Caitlin of Loris, and several other extended family members.
A funeral service was at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 31, at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bryan Fields, the Rev Maxie Hardee, Dr. Kenneth Orbeck, and the Rev. Willie Gillard officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Ernest Jackson ‘Jack’ Rimer
Marion/Garden City — Ernest Jackson “Jack” Rimer, 82, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, in Hospice of Charleston after an illness.
A funeral was at 2:30 p.m. May 29 at Marion Baptist Church. Burial followed at Rose Hill Cemetery directed by Richardson Funeral Home.
Mr. Rimer was born in Salisbury, N.C., a son of the late Ernest James and Esther Rimer. He is also predeceased by a sister, Helen Hillard. Mr. Rimer was a graduate of Boyden High School in Salisbury. He was a veteran of WW II, having served in the Pacific Theater. He was retired from Dupont, and was a member of Marion Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Alta A. Rimer of the home, sons, Steve Rimer and wife, Diane of Mullins, Joe Rimer and his wife, Tara of Coward, daughter, Jean Richardson and her husband, Hank of Marion, brothers, Bill Rimer of Florence, and Karl Rimer of Burbank, Ca., grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Ida ‘Ina’ H. Lewis
Mullins — Ida “Ina” Harrelson Lewis, 77, wife of Caliph Fonville Lewis, died Sunday, May 31, 2009, in Marion County Medical Center after an illness.
She was born Oct. 30, 1931, in Marion County, a daughter of the late Charlie and Maggie Norton Harrelson, Mrs. Lewis retired from the claims department of Blue cross/Blue Shield Insurance Company. She had worked at Eagles Dime Store and Ladd’s in Mullins. She had also been employed at one time as an admitting clerk in the Emergency Rooms of Roper Hospital in Charleston and McLeod Hospital in
Florence. She was a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Wesley Sunday School Class and the Celia Perritt Circle.
Surviving Mrs. Lewis in addition to her husband of the home is a sister, Betty J. Harrelson of Mullins.
Mrs. Lewis was predeceased by a sister, Gertrude Jones and a brother, Louis Harrelson,
Services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 3 at the Macedonia United Methodist Church Prayer Chapel, with the Rev. Kem Thomas officiating. Burial followed in Millers United Methodist Cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Katherine B. Turbeville
Mullins — atherine Buffkin Turbeville, 85, died Monday, June 1, 2009, in Marion County Medical Center after an illness.
She was born Oct. 15, 1923, in Cerro Gordo, N.C., the fourth of four children born to Sommers and Georgia Buffkin. All of her siblings, Bill, Eddie and Annie, preceded her in death.
Katherine grew up mostly around Fair Bluff, N.C., until she met Frontis Turbeville. They were married on January 22, 1953 and to this union two sons were born, Eddie Turbeville and Jimmy D. Turbeville. Eddie passed away at five days old. Jimmy resided in Mullins.
Katherine loved to be around people. She was a nurse for 25 years. She worked at the old Martin’s Hospital in Mullins, then the old Palmetto Hospital in Marion and the old English Park Hospital in Marion. She loved flowers and loved to garden and knit.
Besides one son, Katherine leaves behind a sister-in-law, Geneva Smith and her husband Hagood of Rains and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will greatly miss her.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 4 at Red Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery, with the Rev. Mike Watkins officiating. The services were directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
