Sanford to sign application for stimulus cash

»  Comments | Post a Comment

COLUMBIA (AP) -- South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford is expected to clear the way for the state to get $700 million in federal stimulus cash intended to help the state's schools.

Sanford has said he'll sign the federal application for the money on Monday. He's doing that under an order from the South Carolina Supreme Court after losing a fast-paced legal battle.

Sanford for months opposed requesting the money unless it could be used to offset or reduce state debt. He says the $787 billion federal stimulus law devalues the dollars and saddles generations with debt.

Legislators wrote a budget law that required him to request the money.

School leaders say the money will help. But they are still looking at reducing staff sizes.
