COLUMBIA (AP) — South Carolina state Sen. David Thomas is joining a crowded field of Republican challengers looking to unseat U.S. Rep. Bob Inglis.

Thomas planned to enter the race with a speech Saturday at his Fountain Inn home.

Thomas would be the fifth candidate looking to take on Inglis in next year's primary. The others are prosecutor Trey Gowdy, sandwich company owner Andrew Smart, Wofford University professor Christina Jeffrey and businessman Jim Lee.

The fourth district includes Spartanburg, Greenville, Laurens and Union counties.

Inglis won his third consecutive term and sixth overall in 2008 despite criticism for his stance on the Iraq war and other issues.
