JMS news: Johnakin's "Report to the Parents" featured on Internet
Each School Improvement Council (SIC) is required to write and distribute the annual "Report to the Parents" by April 30 of each year. This provides an excellent opportunity to share Johnakin Middle School's successes with the community as we report on the progress made with the school improvement plan. The 2008-2009 SCI is composed of Dana Rogers, Chairperson and Parent; Lt. Cindy Barr, School Resource Officer; Wendy Bilton, Parent; Jason Bryant, Principal; Jackie Campbell, Parent; Lisa Capps, Parent; Doug Coffeen, Teacher; Annette Dorman, Teacher; Sharon Grice, Community Member; Natalie Grover, Teacher; Sandra Honaker, Parent; Don Huffman, Student Specialist; Randy Johnson, Parent Coordinator; and Mable McAllister, Guidance Counselor.
The group was recently notified by the School Improvement Council that its report was "exemplary" and is featured on their Web site at http://sic.sc.gov. Type in "report to the parents" in the search bar and select # 1, sic.sc.gov - SIC "Report to the Parents" .

JMS students win essay contests
There are six finalists from Johnakin Middle School in the the Conservation District's annual Conservation Essay Contest. The topics for this year included "What on Earth is Soil?", "The Secrets of Soil", and "Taking Care of Our Soil." Awards were presented at the Marion County Technical Education Center on May 19. Student winners and their families were invited to attend. JMS Principal Jason Bryant and two eighth grade science teachers from Johnakin Middle School, Jennifer Causey and Vickie Skipper, also attended the ceremony.
Johnakin Middle School officials said they are proud of the hard work demonstrated by the following finalists: First place, Ashleigh Evans; Second place, Meagan Dunham; Third place, Jeffery Hannah and Heather Venice (tied); and Honorable Mention, Morgan Honaker and Antonio Narcisco. Also, students have been recognized for their participation in the State Superintendent's Awards Program.
The purpose of that awards program is to support the teaching of the South Carolina Academic Standards and to provide fifth and eighth grade students an opportunity to express themselves through the writing process.
Participating districts implement the writing program from December 2008 to March 2009. A class winner is chosen from each English Language Arts class. An overall school or district winner is selected. District winners were highlighted at a statewide recognition ceremony in May in Columbia. Class Winners for JMS are Kenya Avant, Kevin Rowel and Katrina Rowell.
