The Marion Chamber of Commerce Citizenship Awareness Recognition (SAR) award recipients for Marion School District 1’s fourth grading period have been named.
A savings bond, sponsored by First Citizen Bank, was presented to the students in recognition of this award. These students were recognized at the monthly school board meeting on May 4. Winner are Shanequa Bell, 12th grade; Tyler McKenzie, 9th grade; Shekeria Owens, 10th grade recipient; and Shakiya Hickson, 11th grade recipient.
JMS has 100 percent pass rate for students in JMS Algebra 1
Chrystal Kelly's Algebra I class at Johnakin Middle School recently took its End-of-Course Algebra 1 Test. Ten of the 24 students had a perfect score of 100. Five students scored an A including one 95, three grades of 97 and one had a grade of 99. Five students scored a B.
Students in the class are Brandon Alford, Sam Barrentine, Joey Bilton, Michala Blue, Rasheka Brantley, Alexis Brown, Antuanna Bryant, Brenna Bullard, Laura Campbell, Stacey Coleman, Ashley Cross, Leland Daniels, JaQuan Davis, Meagan Dunham, Sarah Edwards, Ashleigh Evans, Chiquira Gamble, Jakarri Godbolt, Morgan Honaker, Darryl Kelly, Ariane Legette, Kellie Marion, Reaves Reynolds and Tillman Sanders. This is the first grade that will go on the students' high school transcript.
Cadet achieves academic excellance
William Logan Rogers IV of Mullins, a pre-business major and son of Mr. and Mrs. William Logan Rogers III, was honored by officials at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, for outstanding academic achievement during the spring semester academic year.
Clemson announce graduates, those on honors lists
Clemson University awarded more than 2,000 degrees at its May 8 commencement ceremonies. Among them were Bryan Wesley Cribb of Marion, earning his bachelor’s of science degree in genetics. He graduated cum laude. Also graduating were Kristin Marselle Reynolds of Marion, with a bachelor’s of science degree in management and Steven Bradley Smith of Mullins, with his bachelor’s of science degree in financial management.
Making the university’s President's List, during the spring semester with a 4.0 (all A's) grade-point average, were Margaret Weber Beck of Marion, majoring in elementary education; Kristin Ann Cox of Marion, majoring in civil engineering; Abigail S. Ham of Marion, majoring in psychology; and Juliann F. Wiggins of Marion, majoring in early childhood education.
Earning a slot on the university’s spring semester Dean's List were William N. Beck of Marion, majoring in civil engineering; Travis Lee Howell of Marion, majoring in biological sciences; and Stephen Wood Taylor of Marion, majoring in biosystems engineering.
Several area students make CCU President’s List
The following students earned honors during the spring semester at Coastal Carolina University. To qualify for the President’s List, students must earn a 4.0 grade point average and be enrolled full time.
Among those making the list are Jessica B. McCracken of Galivants Ferry, Kimberly A. Snyder of Green Sea, Jessica F. Anderson of Marion, William M. George of Mullins, Callie M. Smith of Mullins, Daniel J. Holmes of Nichols and Mary L. Meares of Nichols.
Students earn scholarships from local church
On May 24, two students received scholarships from Marion’s First United Methodist Church. These scholarships are funded through gifts originally given in memory of H.J. “Bud” Davis and Inez Edwards. Since the 1980’s they have been awarded annually according to guidelines established by the church.
Warren Bennett
Warren Bennett, son of Martha Parker, received the Inez Edwards Scholarship. A rising senior at the College of Charleston, Bennett has held several notable positions in the Alpha chapter of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, most recently the title of Chaplain of the Executive Council. His involvement with C.A.R.E., the crisis assessment office on campus, has allowed him to give presentations to incoming freshmen during their orientations, advising them of safety precautions on and off the campus.
In the past Bennett has been active in youth activities at FUMC and continues to support the church with his presence whenever he is home. He has worked with Salkehatchie Summer Mission Service for six years. He is majoring in corporate communications and hopes to graduate in the spring of 2010 and then attend the College of Charleston post-graduate program to obtain a masters degree in communications or student life administration.
The recipient of the Bud Davis Scholarship was Samuel C. Maddox, son of Renee’ and Randy Baxley. Maddox is a member of the senior class of Marion High School and contributes to the success of the school with his participation in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Science Club, Interact Club and the yearbook staff. He co-edited the MHS yearbook for 2008-09.

Maddox is an outstanding baseball player and was voted to be one of the two Most Valuable Players of the 08-09 season. He was selected to represent his team on the All State baseball team. During his formative years, Maddox attended Asbury Hills Methodist Camp, has been involved with UMYF and represented youth on the Church Council.
Maddox plans to attend the Citadel and major in civil engineering.
Sanders gets state superintendent award
Brandon T. Sanders attended the State Superintendent Writing Awards Ceremony in Columbia on May 29, where he was recognized as Marion School District 1's 5th grade essay winner on the importance of financial stability at his age.

He was awarded a plaque and had a photo opportunity with State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex. Brandon was the class winner for Kate Faerber; and overall school winner for Marion Intermediate School. Sanders was accompanied by his parents, Tillman and Amy Sanders, brother Tillman Sanders Jr., and uncle Christopher Sanders.
Marion student graduates from Wofford College
Lamont Latigue was among 270 to receive degrees during the May 17 commencement exercises. Latigue, of Marion, earned a bachelor of arts degree in English.
EPS earns SC Healthy Schools award
Easterling Primary School has received the designation as a South Carolina Healthy Schools Eight-Component Award Winning School. Easterling earned this honor through the school’s health team efforts in promoting the connection between health and learning to improve the well being of students and families. Principal, Angie Grice, will officially receive the S.C. Healthy Schools Award from the State Department of Education during the Summer Leadership Institute on June 24.
Davis gives initial sermon
Deacon Charlie Davis delivered his initial sermon to the receptive congregation of his home church, St. Paul Baptist Church in Mullins, on April 26. His inspirational sermon was entitled "Being Obedient to the Calling." Shown with him is his wife Deaconess Shirley Davis and Pastor Mack T. Hines, top. Davis is taking classes at Morris College School of Divinity in Sumter.
Mullins student wins scholarship
The Prince Hall Grand Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, Jurisdiction of South Carolina, awards five $4,000 scholarships to deserving seniors in South Carolina. Among the 2009 recipients is fourth place winner, Aerialle T. Crawford, a Mullins High School student.
Crawford represents the Rising Star Chapter # 221, District V. Each OES chapter has the opportunity to select one senior from their local high school to begin the quest for these scholarships at the district level. Then seven students with the highest scores on an achievement test are selected from seven districts to compete in Columbia in February each year. The program is designed to encourage and assist African-Americans students in fulfilling their dreams of continuing and earning a post-secondary education. Crawford plans to attend the University of South Carolina.
