Law enforcement investigators and the 12th Circuit Court Solitor’s Office continue to piece together the events that led to the slaying of 29-year old Kanisha McLaughlin in April 2008.
“All we can confirm is that the case remains active and we are pursuing leads along with the assistance of the S.C. Law Enforcement Division, with guidance provided by the solicitor’s office,” Mullins Police Chief Kenneth Davis said this past week.
McLaughlin was killed at the Imperial Motel in Mullins. Marion County Coroner Jerry Richardson said she died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Karen Worley, 33, of Fair Bluff, N.C., was arrested May 4 and charged as an accessory in connection with McLaughlin’s death.
A judge denied bond for Worley’s release this week, 12th Circuit Solicitor Ed Clements III said.
Clements said two other people are in custody in connection with the case. One is charged with murder and the other is charged with conspiracy, he said.
Mullins Police Capt. Michael Bethea said their names cannot be released because police don’t want to damage the investigation.
“We still got a long way to go,” Bethea said.
Clements said McLaughlin was a confidential informant and was set to testify in a drug-related trial. He also said confidential informants and their identities are protected, but safety is based on a person’s cooperation and lifestyle.
