New City of Marion Municipal Judge Patricia A. Speth said she takes her new responsibility very seriously. “I will continue to represent this city as a great small town community,” she said, adding that she is thankful for the opportunity.

In a split decision, Marion City Council members voted to appoint Speth during a July 14 meeting.

An investiture ceremony was held this past Wednesday at the Marion County Court House. Twelfth District Family Court Timothy H. Pogue presided over the ceremony that featured Council members Ralph A. Atkinson, Ronald Atkinson, Marion Police Chief Willie Smith and U.S. District Court Judge William H. Seals.

Speth has practiced law for over 20 years. The Duke University graduate was admitted to the New York Bar in 1985 and was also admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1986, she said.

Since then, Speth has practiced law with her father Charles T. Speth and then later formed her own practice in 1990. Her experience consisted of mainly real estate, probate and wills, small corporate and family law matters, she said. Speth said she was also a title agent.

“I think the City of Marion made an excellent choice,” Sen. Kent Williams said. “She has the legal background and is knowledgeable of the law,” Williams said.

Speth said she was honored and will put all of the good advice she received to good use.

“It was not only an honor to have honorable judges here but to have my friends with me also,” she said.

The new experience is something she looks forward to. “I’ve been reading the bench book, studying again what I’ve learned in law school, so I like the new challenge and the opportunity to apply it to community service,” Speth said.

Speth’s associations and committees include Chairman of the City of Marion Planning and Zoning Commission, Daphne Garden Club, S.C. Women’s law Association, Marion County Bar Association, American bar Association and S.C. Bar Association.

Dozens of people came out to congratulate Judge Patricia A. Speth after being appointed City of Marion Municipal Judge.
