For far too many years South Carolina has suffered from a lack of leadership and partisan politics. Throughout this time we have fallen behind neighboring states in important areas, including economic development.
It has been frustrating for me to witness continued struggles for real and long lasting solutions. Instead of fighting along party lines and fighting with the General Assembly we need to fight to bring back our state’s reputation as a wonderful place for business to not only grow, but to prosper.
Progress needs to happen in the area of economic development. South Carolina has had one of the highest unemployment rates in the country for far too long. These rates are the tell tale sign of a true and dire economic crisis. In order for progress to be made, the sandbox mentality of not playing well with others has got to end. It is well past time to come together under strong leadership to work to lower the unemployment rate, increase jobs and increase economic activity in this state.
Former leaders of both parties have been able to comprehend the importance of a government that is engaged in economic development and prosperity. They had a consistent focus on attracting jobs to our state. I firmly believe that what we do in these next couple of years will determine the shape of our state’s destiny and economy for many generations to come.
I look forward to working with a leadership and a bipartisan effort that will emphasize job creation, both in the recruiting of large businesses and the promotion of small businesses.
