Dillon County women sentenced for insurance fraud

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Two Dillon women were sentenced Tuesday on insurance fraud charges, according to a press release issued by the S.C. Insurance News Service.

Erica and Melissa McCoy, both of 422 Pinecone Road, Dillon, pleaded guilty to false claim for payment more than $1,000. Fourth Circuit Court Judge Paul Burch sentenced both women to 60 days suspended on payment of a fine of $250, and gave them 30 days to pay the fine.

The McCoys faced up to five years in prison and/or a fine. The relationship between the women wasn't clear in the press release.

On April 9, 2008, Erica McCoy was the driver in an accident with another vehicle in the parking lot of Wal-Mart in Dillon. Melissa McCoy and two children were passengers in Erica McCoy’s car.

In an insurance claim later submitted to Nationwide Insurance, Melissa McCoy claimed her minor child was in the car, too. But an investigation revealed her child was not involved in the accident.

Erica McCoy later admitted to the State Law Enforcement Division that Melissa McCoy’s child wasn’t in the car, but she went along with the story anyway.

The case was prosecuted by the S.C. Attorney General’s Office.

The S.C. Insurance Fraud Hotline, (888) 95-FRAUD, is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for reporting insurance fraud, which can be a felony in South Carolina. All reports remain confidential.
