A Cheraw native is now at the helm of an elite squad of specially trained officers within the the S.C. Highway Patrol.

S.C. Highway Patrol Capt. Rob Lee was appointed as the head of the Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team, or MAIT.

MAIT responds to all fatal crashes where the at-fault driver survives.

“It is an honor to be chosen to lead the MAIT unit,” Lee said in a press release. “Collision reconstruction is important on many fronts, from successful prosecution of a crime to helping families get needed answers to questions following a serious motor vehicle collision.”

Lee said he’s investigated more than 2,500 crashes and has reconstructed more than 500 crashes.

Lee began his career with the highway patrol almost 20 years ago as a patrol officer in Berkeley County. After two years, he worked primarily in Dorchester County before moving back to his home county of Chesterfield.

Lee’s career as a member of MAIT began in 2000. He was promoted to sergeant two years later when the Pee Dee MAIT unit based in Florence was established by the highway patrol.

In 2006, Lee took another step toward his current role when he was promoted to first sergeant.

While he worked in Florence with the Pee Dee MAIT, the unit became the first in South Carolina to introduce animation and air bag control module data as evidence in court.

Lee also was on the Pee Dee MAIT unit when it became the first reconstruction unit in the country to prove intent on the part of the driver by using air bag control module data.

Lee left the Pee Dee upon being promoted to lieutenant and being transferred to S.C. Highway Patrol’s headquarters in Columbia, where he supervises the MAIT unit for the state.

Capt. Lee is someone who deeply cares about the quality of his work and the importance of the collision reconstruction,” S.C. Highway Patrol Col. Kenny Lancaster Jr. said in a press release. “He not only oversees MAIT, but is actively involved in multiple highway safety initiatives both within and beyond the department.”

Lee is a member of the National Association of Professional Accident Reconstruction Specialists and is nationally accredited as a collision reconstructionist through the Accreditation Commission for Traffic Accident Reconstruction.

Lee is married to Mary Thomas Johnson-Lee and they have three children: Robert, Mary Adger and Thomas. He is the son of Pat Lee of Cheraw and the late Olin S. Lee Sr.
