A former Marlboro County sheriff’s deputy accused of trading his duty-issued shotgun for 12 methadone pills has been sentenced to five years in jail, suspended to two years probation after a hearing in Darlington on Thursday morning.
Erick Flowers, 26, of 105 High St., McColl, also must pay a $500 fine and perform 100 hours of community service with the Marlboro County DARE program, Darlington County Clerk of Court Scott B. Suggs said.
Flowers was charged with misconduct in office as the result of a State Law Enforcement Division investigation Marlboro County Sheriff Fred Knight requested in August.
The crime happened on or about Sept. 9 in Richland County, according to a SLED press release.
Knight said Thursday he didn’t know how long Flowers had been employed by the sheriff’s office or when he was terminated, but issued this statement soon after Flowers’ arrest: “I will not tolerate such conduct in the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office. Therefore, that is the reason why I called SLED to make sure everything is kept above the law. I must also make sure the integrity of this office is maintained.”
