FLORENCE — The Pee Dee Chapter of the American Red Cross recently celebrated a successful year and honored its volunteers during its annual meeting at the Floyd Conference Center at the Carolinas Hospital System, which also catered the event.
The Philanthropist of the Year award was given to the Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation. In 2002, the foundation purchased the building used by the Pee Dee Chapter at 1601A W. Lucas St. from Progress Energy. The foundation also awarded a $50,000 grant to the chapter July 1 that finalized outstanding debts and supports the chapter’s School CPR Program, said Linda Boone-Smith, the chapter’s executive director.
The Pee Dee Chapter recognized Cody Odom of Florence County, who has served the chapter for more than seven years, as Health and Safety Instructor of the Year
Volunteer of the Year is Anthony Hall of Florence. Disaster Services Volunteer of the Year is Lydia Coachman of Chesterfield County, who deployed to several disasters including the recent wildfires in Myrtle Beach.
Two board members, Danagene Razick and Ryan Scholz, received recognition for outstanding service in the work they accomplished with the recent concert event “From Rap to Ravel.
“Danagene Razick and Ryan Scholz have been outstanding additions to the Pee Dee Chapter,” Bo McMillan, chairman for the chapter’s board of directors, said in a press release. “They each have a lot of energy to bring to the table and always want to know what else they can do to help.”
Also during the event, McMillan was elected to serve a second year as chairman, while Mark Laskowski of the Morning News will serve as chairman-elect. Mike Skarupa of PGBA was selected to serve as vice chairman and Jodi Beauregard, of Carolinas Hospital System, will continue as secretary.
In disaster service delivery, the Pee Dee Chapter responded to 272 fires in 2008. Food, clothing and shelter have been given to more than 900 victims of single-family fires. The chapter has paid more than $150,000 in financial assistance in the fiscal year 2008-2009.
Its military messaging to Armed Forces sent more than 400 messages to deployed servicemen and women, while health and safety services taught almost 10,000 people lifeguarding skills.
The Pee Dee chapter serves Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Marion and Marlboro counties. It receives no funding from state or federal governments, only from private contributions and local United Ways.
