LAKE CITY — Jac’kel S. Brown has had the desire to become a family physician for as long as he can remember.
Jac’kel, a rising 10th-grade student at Lake City High School, said that members of his family serve as registered nurses, certified nursing assistants, a nurse practitioner and a hospital administrator. Even though those family members serve as role models to him, Jac’kel said he wants to take it a step further and become a family physician.
To help achieve his goal of becoming a family physician, Brown is planning to attend a LeadAmerica conference on medicine and health care at Georgetown University, in Washington, D.C., from July 25 through Aug. 3.
LeadAmerica is a college-accredited invitational leadership conference for top middle and high school students from across the United States and the world, Jac’kel’s donation letter states.
The information states the conference aims to help students develop important leadership skills that will assist them in the future.
Brown said he hopes attending the conference will help become a better family physician.
The cost to attend the conference is $2,599, and Jac’kel has already received $1,175. Brown and his family members are soliciting the support of the community by making donations for him to attend the conference.
Brown’s grandmother, Gloria Brown, said the family sponsored a yard sale recently to help with the cost of the conference and that the event was successful.
She said the state of the economy and the high cost of living makes it hard to raise money for causes.
“God is able to do all things,” Brown said in hopes the family raises the amount needed for the conference.
Being a single mother, Kelley Brown said she is very excited to know that her son wants to become a family physician and is always seeking ways to achieve his career goal.
“It makes me feel so good,” Brown said, explaining that many children don’t have the willingness to stick to long-term goals at a very young age.
Brown is a member of the Lake City High School Ensemble, marching band, student government, School Improvement Council, Panther Battalion, color guard and Biology Merit Exam Team.
Additionally, he is a member of the National Junior Beta Club and is a Principal’s Honor Roll Student.
He is also a member of the Historical Greater St. James AME Church, where he serves in various capacities, and is a volunteer with Carolina’s Hospital System.
To make a donation, make checks and money orders payable to LeadAmerica and send mail to 311 E. Main St., Scranton, SC 29591.
