S.C. Consumer Affairs laying off 24 employees

The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs is laying off 24 employees, but the agency says all divisions will remain open.

The department will let the workers go effective July 23 according to Maria Audas of Consumer Affairs in Columbia.

Audas told News Channel 7 on Tuesday employees had taken 15 furlough days to help SCDCA to deal with budget cuts, but those savings weren’t enough to avoid the layoffs.

No services to consumers will be cut because of the job cuts according to Audas.

SCDCA Administrator Brandolyn Thomas Pinkston tells us 42 people will be left in the office. She says, now instead of having representatives located throughout the state, SCDCA will have to make monthly trips around the state to meet with consumers to hear their concerns.

The primary function of SCDCA is to regulate the consumer credit marketplace, to resolve any complaint arising out of the production, promotion or sale of consumer goods or services in South Carolina, whether or not credit is involved.

Consumers are also able to bring their questions or complaints regarding a business to SCDCA when they hold satellite meetings regularly across South Carolina. SCDCA visited Gaffney, Greenwood and Spartanburg among their stops in June.
