Teddy K. Holden Sr.
Mullins – Teddy Kurt Holden Sr., 72, husband of Brenda “Molly” Sweat Holden, died Saturday, July 4, 2009 in his home after an illness.
He was born October 17, 1936 in Marion County, a son of the late Lewis E. and Theda Rogers Holden. Teddy was owner of Holden’s Welding, Holden’s Trailers and Holden Carriage Service. He was co-owner of Molly’s Florist.
Surviving Teddy in addition to his wife of the home are, his children, Tangie Russ and her husband Jerry of Mullins, Eric Holden and his wife Allison of Aynor, Bucky Brown and his wife Sara of North Augusta, Karen Collins, Kim Furguson and her husband Mike of Myrtle Beach, and Rhonda Burroughs and her husband Randy of Marion, 10 grandchildren, a sister, Sylvia Kaye Register and her husband Billy of Marion, a brother-in-law, Bill Sweat and his wife Pasty of Norfolk, Va., and several nieces and nephews.
Teddy was predeceased by a son, Teddy Kurt Holden, Jr. and a granddaughter.
Funeral Services were held at 4 p.m. Monday, July 6 at Mr. Holden’s home at 7448 Old Nichols Highway in Mullins. Burial followed in Red Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

David Carlton Lane.
Marion - David Carlton Lane, 72, died Thursday, July 2, 2009 in Hospice House after an extended illness. Funeral Services were at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, 2009 at Richardson Funeral Home, burial followed at Spring Branch Cemetery.
Mr. Lane was born in Marion County, a son of the late Willie Percy Lane and Hallie Rogers Lane. He was a member of Christ Community Church in Latta and was a retired truck driver.
Surviving are his wife, Annie Sue Lane of the home, daughter, Tina Sue Stroud and her husband, Bobby of Marion, grandsons, David Benjamin Stroud and Christian Bruce Stroud of Marion, brothers, Rhemar Percy Lane, of Greenville, SC, William Roger Lane of Clayton, NC, and Jerry Clifton Lane of Wendell, NC.

Gloria A. “Dolly” Herald.
Gloria A. “Dolly” Herald, age 47 of Kennesaw, died Monday, July 6, 2009. Funeral services were at 11 a.m., Friday, July 10 at Due West United Methodist Church with the Dr. Tom Davis officiating. Burial will be in Cheatham Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.
Dolly was a native of Marion. She is survived by her husband, Mark Herald, daughter, Ryann Herald, son, Sean Herald, sisters, Cheryl Paul of Mt. Pleasant, Cyndi Ward of Ellicott City, MD., brothers, Mickey Woodbury of Marion, “Tuck” Woodbury of Myrtle Beach, many beloved nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. Dolly was preceded in death by her parents, Robert J. & Gloria Ann McDevitt Woodbury.

Dr. Ruffin Smith.
Georgetown – Dr. Ruffin Smith, 80, died Tuesday, July 7, 2009, in Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Smith was born in Durham, NC, December 21, 1928, a son of the late William Ruffin Smith and Nancy Hart Smith. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina and earned a Masters Degree from the University of South Carolina. Dr. Smith earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Logan College of Chiropractic. He taught school and also practiced Chiropractic medicine for a time until his retirement.
Dr. Smith was a communicant of Prince George, Winyah, and Episcopal Church. He was also a member of the Mullins Lions Club, Winyah Lodge #40, Ancient Freemasons, and was a Shiner. Dr. Smith was a former member of Masonic Lodges in Charlotte, NC and Mullins.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Hiers Smith of Georgetown, two sons, Ruffin (Glenda) Smith of Myrtle Beach and Stuart (Sharon) Smith of Murrells Inlet, a daughter, Shelly (David) Robinson of Mullins, two step-sons, Chip (Beverly) Balthis of Georgetown and Len (Jennifer) Balthis of Charleston, a step daughter Kathy N. (Harry) Dawson of Georgetown, thirteen grandchildren, Brittany Smith, Savannah Smith, Amanda Nobles, Katie Burroughs, Jacob Smith, Kara Smith, Carolina Smith, Melissa Dawson Courtney, Bruce Dawson, Caroline Balthis, Madison Ethridge, Ashlyn Ethridge, and Dylan Balthis, three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were at 4 p.m. July 10, 2009 at Prince George Winyah, Epical Church Officiating was the Paul C. Fuener. Inurnment followed in Prince George, Winyah, and Episcopal Church Columbarium.

Dewey Proctor.
Mullins – Dewey Proctor of Mullins, aged 89, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2009, with his wife of 63 years, Evelyn Grantham Proctor, at his side.
He was born in Lake View, on July 1, 1920, son of the late Fredrick A. and Minnie Lee Brogdon Proctor. Mr. Proctor was preceded in death by three brothers, Ben, Earl and Odell Proctor of Fork, and one sister, Ethel Lee Proctor Gibbs of Mullins.
Mr. Proctor was a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church of Mullins, and had a 26 year long career as chief of Police in Mullins. He had a colorful high school and college football career, followed by a prestigious stint in the NFL.
During high school career at Lake View, Mr. Proctor was a starting player for four years, and in 1938 he served as Captain of the State Championship Lake View Team.
During his college career, he has been described as the greatest running back in the history of Furman University. He started in football for three years at Furman, from 1940 to 1942. In 1940, he led the state in scoring with 52 points and was named to the All-State Team. In 1942, he was named captain and most valuable player on the Furman team, as well as being named to the All-State and All-Southern teams. He also played in the Blue-Gray Game. He was voted most valuable player in the annual Carolinas Bowl Game.
In 1942, Mr. Proctor was named to Furman’s All-Time Football Team, and in May 1982, he was inducted into the Furman Athletic Hall of Fame. He played three years with strong Navy teams during the mid 1940’s and then joined the New York Yankees, where he played for three years; he later played one year with the Chicago Rockets. In 1945, he played with an All-Star Navy Team overseas, after playing with outstanding teams at Bainbridge and Great Lakes Navy Squads. His football career ended in 1949.
Survivors include two sons, Dewey Bishop “Bip” Proctor (Dianne) of Southport, NC, and David Kim Proctor (Trish) of Lexington, a daughter, Libby Alford Nain (Bert) of Mullins, three grandchildren, Sara Alford, Jessica and William Proctor, and one great-grandchild, Natalia.
Funeral Services were at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, 2009, at Macedonia United Methodist Church in Mullins. Burial followed at Lake View Cemetery, Lake View.

Marion - Mrs. Marjorie Lewis Jones, 83, widow f Ralph Jones, died Monday, July 6, 2009 in her home.
She was born in November 13, 1925 in Marion County, a daughter of the late William Alec Lewis and the late Junior Bell Drew Lewis Graham.
Mrs. Jones was retired from Heritage Sportswear. She attended the Gapway School. Mrs. Jones was a faithful member of Marion Church of God.
Surviving Mrs. Jones are 3 daughters, Barbara Ann Cox and her husband Billy of Mullins, Shirley Hyatt and her husband, Randy of Marion, Dianne Martin and her husband, Timmy of Mullins, a son, Donnie Jones and his wife, Kathy of Britton’s Neck, her grandchildren, Tammy Kelly, Sebrenia Dimmery, Randy Hyatt, II, Crystal Hyatt, Jennifer Davis and Heather King, 8 great grandchildren, a sister, Flora Mae Surles of Lumberton, NC., and a brother, Robert J. Lewis of Florida.
Mrs. Jones was predeceased by 2 sons, Jerry Jones and Billy Ray Jones, a daughter, Margie Gail Jones Wilson, and a granddaughter, April Henderson.
Funeral Services were at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 9 at Marion Church of God, with the Rev. Allen Black officiating. Burial followed in Midway Cemetery, directed by Smith-Collins Funeral Home of Marion.
