Deputies are trying to determine who is responsible for a string of all-terrain vehicle thefts in Marion County, according to a press release issued Thursday by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
The rash of thefts began June 24 when deputies found a stolen John Deere tractor and two ATVs at 3806 Ginger Road in Marion. Samuel Belsito, 42, of Marion is charged with possession of stolen property in connection with that case, according to the release.
The equipment was towed away from the scene by a wrecker service, but was stolen a second time two days later, according to the release.
Deputies found one of the ATVs down the street from the second crime scene. The other is still missing.
One week later, a man involved in an ATV roll-over accident told deputies who responded to the scene the vehicle belonged to someone else and his brother had driven it home for him. Deputies went to the home and discovered the ATV was stolen from Conway, according to the release.
On Thursday, a deputy saw two men trying to load an ATV onto a truck on Mottern Road near Mullins.
The men spotted the deputy and fled the scene — one on the ATV and the other in the truck, according to the release. The suspect riding the ATV eventually jumped off and ran into the woods. Both suspects remain at large.
The ATV was located and returned to the owner, according to the release
