COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Two groups are challenging Duke Energy's request for a water quality permit so it can relicense five dams along a South Carolina river.
The Department of Health and Environmental Control Board is set to hear arguments Thursday from American Rivers and the Coastal Conservation League. The groups say Duke hasn't done enough to make sure the 225-long Catawba and Wateree rivers in North and South Carolina remain safe for wildlife and drinking water.
Duke Energy needs water quality permits from both Carolinas before its 11 hydroelectric dams can be relicensed. North Carolina has already issued permits for the six dams in that state.
The groups also say the permit conflicts with an ongoing lawsuit regarding equitable use of the river.
