A Florence man pleaded guilty to robbery charges in federal court and will likely serve at least 10 years in prison, according to a press release issued Tuesday by U.S. Attorney’s office.
William Roby Cox, 35, agreed to at least 10 years in prison but will be sentenced later.
On July 27, 2008, Cox entered the Food Lion Grocery Store on Second Loop Road in Florence and approached the cashier to buy a drink.
He then lunged across the counter and took money from the open cash drawer. That same day, Cox went to the Kangaroo Convenience Store on Cashua Drive and a CVS Pharmacy on Irby Street and robbed those stores too, according to the release.
Cox then led police on a 20-mile high-speed chase that ended after Cox crashed his truck into a field and fled on foot. He was later found and arrested.
The case was handed by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rose Mary Parham of the Florence Office. The case was investigated by the State Law Enforcement Division, the Florence Police Department and the FBI.
