Summer is here and no 4th of July celebration would be complete without fireworks. However, each year approximately thirteen thousand people are treated in emergency departments for firework related injuries in the United States.
June 1-July 4 is National Firework Safety Month, which is dedicated to bringing public awareness to the safe use of fireworks and to the prevention of firework injuries. Most people do not realize just how dangerous fireworks can be until they or someone they know is injured. Before setting off fireworks, make sure everyone knows about firework safety and remembers these simple tips:
• Only use fireworks outdoors
• Do not use fireworks when drinking alcohol
• Use caution by following all package directions and obeying all laws regarding the use of fireworks
• Keep a bucket of water or water hose nearby
• Never let children under age 16 use fireworks unsupervised
Fireworks are meant to be enjoyed. In order to avoid the risk and stress of lighting your own fireworks and the possibility of a tragedy, attend a public fireworks display and leave the lighting to the professionals.
Note: the annual Friendship Community Fireworks Display will be on the White Sox’s ballfield in the Friendship Community in Gresham on Friday, beginning at 8:30 p.m. The public is invited.
