Community can still help needy with donations to United Way

»  Comments | Post a Comment

We all know about the challenges facing all of us as the economy continues to struggle.

The latest unemployment figures for the Pee Dee certainly reinforce what we all know.

More and more people are out of work.

Even though Florence County’s unemployment rate isn’t as bad as other Pee Dee counties, its unemployment rate is up, as well.

And when times are tough like this the need for help from agencies supported by the United Way increases.

But along with the need donations tend to fall off as well.

But people responded very well to the Morning News and Salvation Army’s Empty Stocking Fund this year.

And lots of people already have given generously to the United Way of Florence County.

And all the agencies that depend on that money and their clients are grateful.

But there’s still a little time left to give, and we would urge those who haven’t to consider a donation.

Some quick facts and figures about what the United Way has done in our community.

In the last fiscal year, United Way gave more than $1.1 million to 24 agencies that serve health and human service needs.

They include Pee Dee Red Cross, Mercy Medicine, Boys and Girls Club and Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Assault.

Each of these agencies working with the United Way has taken steps to make sure they have procedures in place to make sure their efforts can be measured and that they are making a difference.

In other words, your money is being spent wisely and the outcomes can be judged.

Last year, United Way agencies “helped” some 48,000 times as they served the disabled, disadvantaged children, provided food for seniors through the Senior Citizens Association, and helped families who found themselves in trying circumstances.

There is no telling how many of these people wouldn’t have been helped if people hadn’t given.

United Way also helped by giving grants to a number of programs including mini-grants to a homeless shelter that was having financial problems.

Another example was a summer program for disadvantaged youth at Florence-Darlington Tech, and ScienceSouth.

The list goes on and on. And everyone is thankful for your help.

But, if you haven’t, even a small donation can go a long way.

Donations can be made to United Way at 1621 W. Palmetto Street, Florence S.C. 29501 or at its Web site at www.uwflorence.org. For more information, call United Way directly at (843) 662-2407.
