Florence-Darlington Technical College has reached the highest spring enrollment in the college’s history with more than 4,400 students attending classes.
Dr. Shelley Fortin, vice president for enrollment management and student services, presented the latest enrollment figures to members of the Florence-Darlington County Commission for Technical Education during a regular meeting Wednesday. The increase in student enrollment can be seen in several areas of the college.
Fortin said enrollment data shows new or first-time students increased by 32 percent.
The college also has experienced an increase in high school students enrolling in dual credit courses.
Students who are enrolled in dual credit courses are able to earn college credit while earning credit for his or her high school diploma. The classes are taken during a regular school semester.
Dual credit enrollment at the college has increased 60 percent.
Fortin said overall, the college’s enrollment has increased at a greater rate than the South Carolina Technical College System.
She said the college’s enrollment is 17 percent ahead of what it was this time last year.
The number of students who participate in Florence-Darlington Tech’s online college also has increased about 46 percent.
During the meeting, the commission approved implementing the South Carolina Illegal Immigration Reform Act Policy, which was signed into law in June.
Action on an agreement with the S.C. National Guard to build a facility on the campus of the Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing and Technology was deferred to a later meeting.
The facility would be used for vehicle maintenance and the college eventually would house its automotive technology program there.
The facility would be at no cost to the college.
