Although it’s cold outside now, local beach services are getting ready for the warm spring and summer temperatures and the people that come with them.
Renelle Wolff, training officer with Lack's Beach Service, said when many companies are reducing their workforce, she’s doing phone interviews and fielding questions from people who are hoping to be one of lifeguards she will hire.
Lack's Beach Service, the largest in Myrtle Beach, needs more than one hundred lifeguards to monitor about 8.5 miles of beachfront.
"We do have a swim test so a lot of people don't pass the swim test and they think they are going to, so we do over hire, however we are receiving a lot of application so it makes it pretty easy." Said Wolff.
Easy, if you have lifeguard certification from the American Red Cross or The Y.M.C.A and can swim 550 yards in ten minutes or less.
Despite the ‘easy’ requirements, Wolff said applications are up about 30 percent this year and most of them are from people who live in the area.
"They just say they can't get jobs elsewhere, part time or full time and we definitely need lifeguards for the summer and we can't make cutbacks on our employees so a lot of people are turning to us I think for summer employment." Wolff said.
Wolff adds that while she's still getting a lot of interest from international students, like in year's past, this year, the number of American and local applicants is the highest she's ever seen.
