There’s another big scam is running rapid. This time it's a phone scam targeting mostly cell phones in the Pee Dee. Just last week News 13 told you about a scam circulating with a credit union in Florence. Now, it's a credit card and ATM scam. Callers ask for personal information such as your birthday, social security number and where you bank.
Cynthia Hayes of Dillon said her husband and several others she knows received one of the calls. “He said you're not going to believe it, and I said what's wrong? Said Hayes. “He said this company called me and said that my ATM card had expired and that the account was breeched and he hung up right away."
The emails and dozens of calls News 13 received from viewers basically follow the same formula. It seems most originate from Canada. The scams are growing in numbers and preying on people's troubles.
Kathy Graham of the Better Business Bureau said they also received many calls Monday. She warns consumers to not fall for it. "They want to believe it's true. They want to believe that they're going to be saved, that they're going to be rescued, that they're going to get that money that they really did win, that lottery and that if somebody really did get my credit card information, this person on the other end of the line if going to save me or rescue me from this problem."
That's the bottom line. People are desperate for money and want help. The scammers of course know that and are hoping your guard is down and you'll help them out financially.
The numbers are from several area codes. So, if possible use your caller ID and don't answer unknown calls.
