CONWAY -- South Carolina’s unemployment numbers will be released on Tuesday. Those numbers likely will not be good for Horry County says Mary Nell Smith, Area Director at the Coastal Workforce Center in Conway.
"We’re expecting them to go up higher,” explained Smith. ”I mean we're just not putting anybody back to work right now you know, the beach's unemployment is seasonal work and already people are working on reduced hours this year so it’s is harder for them to make ends meet."
The county traditionally has one of the best rates in the state, but in November, it wasn't even the best in this part of the state.
However, it definitely isn’t all bad news. Despite the high un-employment numbers there are employers like David Teeple, who are looking for employees. He says, for those who take advantage of the opportunity, Coastal Workforce Center is the place where they might just find it.
“We’re one of the fortunate companies since we're in the home health-care fields,” said Teeple. “So we're in a field where the industry is growing and we're here to interview about 20 people looking for jobs.”
Teeple also says, he's optimistic that most or all will get a job, since he knows how successful the program has been in the past.
“Over the past 8 years we've been able to help 500 people get jobs.”
Smith says job hunters need to make use of resources that are available at their finger tips. News 13 followed Smith around the center as she explained the various work stations where her staff sat with job seekers going over their resumes. She adds the biggest advantage to the unemployed is free internet access provided at the center.
“This is the time to make your self job ready, “ added Smith,” because let's just say that somebody does open up four or five jobs and fifty or a hundred people apply for each of those jobs, you want to have that one up on getting that job.”
