A potential new law in Horry County could mean big changes for just about everyone.
A proposed special event ordinance being considered by Horry County Council would mean anybody who wants to have an outdoor event in the county would have to pay a fee and get a permit.
Public Information Officer Lisa Bourcier said council is still in the beginning stages of revising the ordinance, but they would like to have a final version before the spring.
Bourcier said there’s already an event ordinance on the books, but it’s only about three sentences long and council is revising it to be more detailed.
"Having it not only for biker rallies which is kind of how this all started, but really pertaining to all events that's taking place in Horry County." said Bourcier.
Some of the events that would have to get permits would be the big bike rally events, any organized formation, parade, procession or assembly, like an antique car show, outdoor musical concerts, festivals, fairs, carnivals, or rallies which may be expected to have five hundred people or more, block parties, community events, marathons, bicycle races or tours, spectator sports such as football, basketball, and baseball games. Bourcier said some of those restrictions could affect local schools.
"I don't believe it was the intent of the school district to have these applications applied to them, but it may be if it's a certain specific event." said Bourcier.
Bourcier adds the school board is writing out exemptions they would like to have and they will be considered.
The cost of the permit would also change, right now, its $25. It would increase to an initial non-refundable fee of $250 and $100 for each day of the event.
Council has only approved the first reading and three are required for it to become law.
Bourcier said everyone will get an opportunity to ask questions about how the ordinance will affect them at a public information meeting, Jan. 29, at 9 a.m. in the M.L. Brown, Jr. building in Conway
