A Bennettsville woman was arrested Wednesday after authorities said she helped an inmate escape from the Palmer Pre-release Center in Florence, said Josh Gelinas a spokesman for the S.C. Department of Corrections.
Laketa Jinea Brown, 23, of 2230 Honeysuckle Lane is charged with harboring or employing an escaped convict, Florence County Detention Center bookings report show.
According to her arrest warrant, Brown met Rayshawn James on June 28 behind the release center, where he was an inmate, and drove him away. She then drove him to meet another woman in Laurinburg, N.C, according to the warrant.
Authorities said the suspect was on James’ inmate visitation list at Palmer and knew he was an inmate at the Florence County jail. He was serving a six-year sentence for distributing crack cocaine in Chesterfield County.
Brown was released Wednesday from the facility.
James is still wanted by the S.C. Department of corrections, Gelinas said. He is described as a 29-year-old black man about 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing about 200 pounds.
