A Bennettsville man has pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearms in connection with a gang-related shooting, U.S. Attorney W. Walter Wilkins said in a press release.
Laqurone Trankil Kinney, 23 faces up to 10 years in prison. U.S. District Judge Terry L. Wooten accepted his plea and will sentence him later.
On March 30, 2007, Kinney was identified as the driver of a vehicle involved in a drive-by shooting in Bennettsville. The victim, an alleged member of a gang, was shot in the hip when the vehicle in which he was sitting was fired upon at least seven times by several men of a rival gang.
On Dec. 20, 2007, Kinney was a passenger in a car stopped for driving without headlights and was found to have a gun tucked in his waistband. When tested, the shell casings from the March 30 shooting matched the gun found in Kinney’s waistband. He has a previous conviction for robbery.
The case was investigated by the Bennettsville Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Rose Mary Parham of the Florence office is prosecuting the case as part of Project CeaseFire, which seeks to prosecute those who unlawfully use or possess firearms.
