Even the soggy weather couldn’t keep voters from hitting the polls Tuesday in Atlantic Beach to elect a new mayor.
Voters this time, only saw the names Retha Pierce and Irene Armstrong appear on the ballots.
The tiny town’s race for mayor saga continues after the November 2007 race ended with one vote separating the candidates, but that vote was thrown out.
A second vote late last year was also thrown out because South Carolina’s Supreme Court said write-in candidates should not have been permitted. Tuesday’s election did not allow any write-in votes.
Long time residents that turned out to cast their vote tell News 13 that this isn’t their first time voting since the race started a year and a half ago. They hope this time around they will actually see closure to the year old mayoral contest.
“I'm just looking for somebody with some change I mean this is my third time voting,” said Ralshe Jenkins who been a resident of Atlantic Beach for 26 years. “I’m hoping we can get it right this time. I'd like to see a lot of changes down here. We've been through a struggle here for a while.”
An even longer resident for the small town Jannie Isom who has lived there for 44 years, says whatever the case maybe enough is enough.
"We need to what is right and come together and be for everybody,” said Isom. ”We don’t need to be divided anymore, we've been divided enough we need to come together because this town is not going to move until we come together, that's just simple as that."
