Latta Mayor Pro-Tem, Moses Kornblut, died this past Saturday from natural causes, officials say. He was 93.
Moses Kornblut was born in Latta, and those close to him say he died working on his passion.
Lutherine Williams served on the Town Council with Kornblut and says, "To be a great council person you really have to love the town you're in, and he really loved the town of Latta."
Now inside Latta Town Hall, an empty seat with a black bow is where he sat.
Lt. Crystal Moore with the Latta Police Department says, "Mr. Moses was a people person, all around. Since I was little I remember going to his store on Main Street, Kornblut's Department store, shopping with my mom and grandmom there."
She adds, "He'll be sadly missed.”
One of the staples on Main St. in Latta is the Kornblut's Department Store. It's been running for over 100 years.
People around the town also say they were always impressed with how much knowledge Kornblut had about his town. He was also very involved throughout the community with various organizations.
Rick Kopituk spoke regularly with Kornblut and worked at a business just across the street from the department store
He says, "I can't think of anything that he's done that hasn't been for the town. He really, really had the town deep into his heart."
Town officials say a special election will need to take place to fill Kornblut’s empty seat.
