The Horry County Humane Society's Board of Directors voted Wednesday night to reopen the group's shelter, one month to the day after it was closed due to a deadly distemper outbreak.
The shelter will reopen Thursday at 8 a.m.
Since the closing, the staff had to euthanize 117 dogs believed to have been infected with distemper; many of those were animals that were adopted from the shelter, then returned because of health issues, shelter records showed.
The shelter opened the spay-neuter clinic Wednesday morning and opened the shelter to animal control officers last week.
Animal control will use a kennel at the shelter that has unfinished repairs the board hoped to have completed before reopening, Philips said.
