Community steps forward to help raise money for Empty Stocking

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The Salvation Army has received more than $100,000 in donations this year to the Empty Stocking Fund.

That’s quite an accomplishment considering the economic times we are in, meaning people have less to give but there are more people in need.

According to a story in the Morning News, the fund, which has been providing help for 27 years, received $100,036 in financial contributions.

It is almost a 30 percent increase from the $77,992 raised in 2007.

The fund is a joint effort between the Salvation Army and the Morning News.

We get a big assist from the Florence branches of BB&T that serve as a collection point for funds, as well.

Kalee Tolar, Salvation Army secretary and human resources director in Florence, told the Morning News:

“It’s a good thing, because with the drop in the economy and everything, we have more people coming in and asking for assistance.”

All checks donated before New Year’s Day went into the 2008 Empty Stocking Fund, but any received after Jan. 1 will go toward the 2009 fund, Tolar said.

People who would like to help families can still continue to contribute.

-- By calling the Salvation Army at (843) 662-4461.

-- By dropping off toys or monetary donations to the Salvation Army office building at 2210 Hoffmeyer Road in Florence.

-- By giving monetary donations at any Florence BB&T bank branch: 605 S. Irby St., 1831 W. Evans St., and 407 W. Second Loop Road. Checks should be made payable to the Empty Stocking Fund, c/o Salvation Army.

The Empty Stocking Fund not only accepts monetary and gift donations, but also food and clothing.

We certainly thank all who gave to the fund including the Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation and the Aiken Foundation.

There also were many large anonymous gifts as well that certainly helped reach the more than $100,000 raised.

But, in addition to those large donations, the small ones from individuals or small groups were certainly special.

Many other charities out there and those in need still need help.

But we would be remiss if didn’t give a big thank you for the tremendous success this year of the Empty Stocking Fund.
