A Georgia man is out on bond after he was accused of violating a Johnsonville City Ordinance that prohibits games of chance, Johnsonville Police Chief Ron Douglas said.
Tony Angelo, 43, of 311 N. River Circle, Hogansville, Ga., is charged with unlawful games and betting, operation of a retail business without license, giving false information to law enforcement officers and carrying a concealed weapon, Florence County Detention Center bookings reports show.
Police said the suspect set up a small tent on the side of a Johnsonville road and offered passersby the chance to win one of the racing jackets he had on display. Gamblers paid $5 to roll dice until they accrued 100 points on the suspect’s point scale, which was displayed inside, Douglas said.
On Dec. 29, police arrived at the tent and questioned the suspect about what he was doing. Investigators later found a handgun under the seat of his car, Douglas said.
After the suspect gave police several false names, they determined he was wanted in Florida on charges that he fired a gun into a crowd.
Angelo was released the following day from the jail in Effingham. Bond information wasn’t available.
