A new year also means new public officials in office.
Sunday, Wayne Byrd was sworn in as Darlington County's new sheriff.
Tuesday, Major Hulon will-be sworn in as Dillon County's new sheriff.
Both of these occasions marks the first time in more than twenty years that those counties have had new sheriffs.
Monday, afternoon Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone was sworn in for his second term.
The swearing-in comes after Boone easily defeated former Sheriff Jimmy Gregg.
"I’m very happy to be honest with you. I think I’m more happy for our guys and gals who work for us. We did this together," Boone said.
Judge Ralph King Anderson administered the oath of office to Florence County Sheriff Boone at the Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing and Technology on the campus of Florence-Darlington Technical College.
Several supporting law enforcement agencies were there, along with Boone's staff.
Boone told News13 that in his next term he hopes to build upon their successes, which include fighting gang activity, county corruption and drugs.
With the trouble economy Boone admits that can lead to an increase in crime, and also take a toll on the department's budge. He said they hope to add more man-power and increase their visibility throughout Florence County.
